Is Shingles A Disease?

by jake on June 18, 2012

Shingles is common all over the place. Some people refer to is as herpes zoster. Shingle is a viral skin problem. The virus responsible for it is called vericella zoster. The skin condition usually comes up on the face and the side of the body. It is usually accompanied by pain and scratching.  Possibility of having the skin condition tends to increase as you advance in age. This is not to say the younger ones do not have it too.  Those who are above 50 years of age are mostly predisposed to this condition. If your immune system is compromised too, you can end up with it. Being on a medication, having injury or undergoing stress are common factors that can lead to such compromised state of the immune system and this makes it easy for one to end up with shingles.

If you have ever had small pox earlier, shingles can appear long after the small pox had been treated. After small pox treatment, the organism does not die; it only remains dormant. Once the immune system is compromised, the small pox comes up again in the form of shingles.  However, after you have been treated for this skin condition, the chances of ever getting it again is very low. Many of the individuals who had been so treated never complained anymore about it; even with compromised immune system.

Associated symptoms

At the earliest stage of shingles infection, one begins to have flu like kind of feeling. Some feverish kind of feeling may also ensue. This is to say that shingle infection can go systemic. It is also a proof to the fact that shingle can cause disease. The symptoms change later to bring up itching and painful sensations on certain areas of the body where the rashes of shingles will later appear. After a while, the rashes will appear and it will do so in clusters of small bumps on your skin. It will later graduate to blisters.

Conclusion

From the description given above, it should be clear enough that shingles can cause disease. Many viral infections actually lead to disease. This is because viruses are parasites and they tend to rely on the body system of the host to live. They also enter into the blood and lead to the occurrence of systemic problems. You will do well to get the thing treated on time once you notice its symptoms.
